ELT well workshops
Opportunities for professional development can be
hard to fit into a busy term, but good teachers know how vital on-going training is for maintaining
high standards, and building career momentum.
ELT well workshops offer you the chance to explore the issues
whenever and wherever it suits you. We make professional development easy:
1) choose the topics you want to explore
2) decide how long the workshops should be (half a day, an evening, a whole day, or longer)
3) hold them in your own venue, or come to Lancaster for a real break from your normal routine
(subject to recruitment of at least 6 participants).
All workshops cover the current legal requirements, and enough of the theoretical background to
help you understand which strategies and techniques may succeed better than others.
But the main focus is always on practical approaches to working with learners - how you can make
a difference in your classroom.
You can choose from the following:
half-day workshops:
- Including language learners with specific learning differences
(e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, AD/HD, Asperger's syndrome)
- Including language learners with a hearing impairment
- Including language learners with a visual impairment
- Including language learners with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses
- Incorporating literacy into language teaching **NEW**
- Key principles in language testing **NEW**
And coming soon:
- Incorporating citizenship/culture into language teaching
one-day workshops:
- Including language learners with sensory impairments
- Including language learners with emotional and specific learning differences
- Testing Dyslexic Language Learners **NEW**
**Please note: the 1-day version of this workshop does not include strategies for identifying
dyslexia in students who do not have English as a first language.**
If that is your main interest, please ask about the following course:
- Assessing English language learners for exam arrangements **NEW**
- Working with pre-Entry level students (i.e. beginners) **NEW**
- Your choice of any two of the half-day options combined into a whole day workshop
- Suggest your own programme, which can be tailored to suit the particular needs of your
school or department.
2-day workshop: Testing Dyslexic Language Learners
Day 1: different purposes and types of test, issues of fairness, balancing reliability and validity,
washback issues, and procedures to enhance test quality.
Day 2: strategies for identifying dyslexia, desiging dyslexia-friendly tests, putting reasonable
