ELT well assessment session

Do you ever have the feeling that you are just not reaching a particular student?

It is not always easy to decide whether a student's difficulties are due to
first language interference or underlying difficulties in learning, such as dyslexia.

By assessing his/her underlying learning strategies, observing the student in class, and discussing
with both the learner and the staff how teaching can be made most effective, ELT well can help you
ensure that all your students fulfil their potential.

Very often it is small changes in how classes are organised that will enable students with disabilities
or learning differences to thrive in the language classroom. Other students will feel the benefit too!
Technology or specialist equipment can usually help, too, and ELT well are happy to advise on this
after a consultation.

Exam access arrangements

Standardised tests to identify specific learning differences have to be carefully adapted to make them suitable for use in a multilingual context. Unfortunately, in many colleges learning support teams don't
feel able to provide a service organising exam arrangements for students who have learning differences and whose first language is not English.

That's why for the last three years a project at Blackpool and the Fylde College has been running, looking at the best ways of assessing ESOL learners, and arranging extra time for their exams.

If you have learners whom you feel would benefit from access arrangements in their exams, but are not sure about how to apply, please contact ELT well to find out more.
